  • Castle of the Counts

    Castle of the Counts

The 12th century Castle of the Counts was restored in "romantic" fashion in the late 19th century. The castle was the residence of the counts of Flanders and seat of the central administration and court of justice (Raad van Vlaanderen) from the middle ages until the 18th century. After having been sold it was totally transformed with other buildings into a factory, even housing workers at some point. Bought again by the city and the state, a reappraisal and restoration began in the 19th century, eventually turning it into one of Ghent's major tourist attractions.

    The historic centre

The historic centre (de Kuip) of Ghent with the medieval towers of the St. Bavon Cathedral, the Belfry and the St. Nicholas 'Church, the old harbour (Graslei) and St. Michaels' Church. In the distance can be seen the towers of the Universitary Library and the St. Peter's Abbey.

  • The Belfry

    The Belfry

The 14th century Belfry, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, was in the Middle Ages the place where the municipal privileges were kept under lock and key, symbolizing the city’s independence. The adjoining cloth hall represents the Ghent's prosperity. Standing 91 metres tall, the Belfry also served as the main watch tower.

    St. Nicholas' Church

The 13th-century St. Nicholas' Church (Sint-Niklaaskerk). On the right can be seen one of the bells from the nearby Belfry, symbolizing the legendary Roeland Bell (Klokke Roeland), tolling whenever there was danger.

    Korenlei

The left bank of the Leie, formed with the Graslei the commercial heart of old Ghent. The beautiful baroque façade of the "Gildehuis der Onvrije Schippers" (1739) in the centre reminds of former glories. Photo taken in November 2009.

  • Geeraard de Duivelsteen

    Geeraard de Duivelsteen

13th-century Romanesque castle, named after its owner Gheeraert van Ghent, nicknamed "The Devil". Purchased by the city, the building served as arsenal, school, orphanage, even as insane asylum. In the late 19th century it was bought by the state and served as state archives until 2015.

  • Nature park Overmeers

    Nature park Overmeers

A small, 7 hectares, oasis of green in Ghent, nature park Overmeers is meant for a healthy stroll or some birdwatching, and if it wasn't for the usual idiots who refuse to keep their dogs on the lead (although demanded so) and that other plague, reckless cyclists who consider every trail a speedway, it could well be ideal.

    Pastoral

There's more than just a bit of Constable in this bucolic scene which still can be found in Drongen, just outside of Ghent.
