    This monumental Benedictine abbey founded in the 7th century, rebuilt in the first half of the 11th century (consecrated in 1067), was an important centre of learning in the middle ages and possessed a particularly rich library.

    West wall of the transept (ca. 1040-1050) and the nave (ca. 1050-1067), foremost examples of the thin-wall construction. The west wall of the transept shows an early example of clerestory passage.

    The alternating system of the elevation design can clearly be seen: compound piers with engaged shafts alternate with cylindrical piers. There was no stone vault.
