Maligne Canyon is a narrow and deep (50 metres) slot canyon carved into the Palliser Formation, a limestone layer deposited in a tropical sea some 365-million years ago, outside of Jasper. The mosses and lichens that cover its walls form a colourful canvas contrasting with the milky flow of the river.
Berries and other soft fruits are an essential food source for bears in summer. Black bears are omnivores, yet plant material forms the bulk of their diet. The sight of this fearsome predator devouring little berries is something to behold!
